CSUSB reaches 10th West Region final

Cal State San Bernardino fought off a valiant effort by University of Alaska Anchorage in the first two sets and advanced to the NCAA Division II West Regional volleyball championship match for the 10th straight year with a 3-0 sweep of the Seawolves in the Coyotes gym. San Bernardino will face fellow CCAA member Cal State L.A. (23-8) for the region title at 7 p.m. today, Saturday, Nov. 21, in Coyote Gymnasium.

CSUSB art museum hosts classical concert inspired by Art Nouveau

Classical music will be the perfect accompaniment to the artwork currently on display at Cal State San Bernardino's Robert V. Fullerton Art Museum. "A Concert of PAN-European Late 19th Century Music" will take place in the museum's main gallery on Tuesday, Nov. 24, from 7:30-9:30 p.m. Admission is free.
Trustees approve budget proposal focused on 'recovery, reinvestment'

The California State University Board of Trustees on Wednesday, Nov. 18, approved a $3.2 billion budget proposal for 2010-2011 that includes an $884 million state General Fund increase aimed at "recovering and reinvesting" funding in the CSU.
Professor will have new book published and his 'Diaries' reissued

"This River," the latest book by Cal State San Bernardino English professor James Brown, will be published by Phoenix Books, the Los Angeles-based publisher announced. In addition, one of Brown's previous best-sellers, "The Los Angeles Diaries," will be republished by Phoenix Books.
Cal State San Bernardino application period for fall 2010 runs through Nov. 30

Students interested in attending Cal State San Bernardino in 2010-2011 are encouraged to file their applications during the fall 2010 priority application period, which runs through Nov. 30. In the past, CSUSB has accepted applications after the priority application period. However, because of severe reductions to the California State University budget, fewer students will be admitted during the coming year and the closing date for applications has not been determined.
University Police helping campus families this holiday season

Cal State San Bernardino's University Police Department is taking on the roles of Santa and his elves to assist some less fortunate campus and community families this holiday season. The police department's inaugural Holiday Helper Program is intended to help CSUSB families who have been impacted this year by the challenging economy, including by the implementation of employee furloughs, as well as children at the university's Children's Center.
VITA program volunteers: Enroll now for winter quarter

Cal State San Bernardino students of any major are encouraged to enroll now if they plan to participate in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program in winter quarter. VITA is a program sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service and the California Franchise Tax Board that provides income tax return service for low income, elderly and disabled taxpayers free of charge.
Winter parking permits now available for online purchase

Winter quarter parking permits are now available for purchase online. Students can avoid long lines by purchasing their parking permit online and having it mailed to them by the following business day.

Reported incidents of hate-related violence and vandalism declined in America in 2008 from the year before – a period that included both the election of Barack Obama as president and a burst of threats and hate-mongering as Election Day neared. Statistics show a 2 percent drop in reported hate crimes from 2007 levels, according to law-enforcement data from 15 states compiled by the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at California State University, San Bernardino.

Marketing professor Eric Newman gets Cal State San Bernardino's Golden Apple

Eric Newman, a Cal State San Bernardino marketing professor, got two standing ovations from his students on Thursday. The first came when university President Al Karnig, trailed by a group of faculty, appeared in his classroom to announce Newman as the winner of this year's Golden Apple Award, one of two major teaching honors the campus gives each year. New study: U.S. hate crimes fall slightly in '08, but data is limited

Hate crimes reported to police declined about 2 percent in 2008, according to an analysis of official composite government data from 14 states in every region and the District of Columbia conducted by the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at California State University, San Bernardino. The survey total for 2008 of reported hate crime was 4,911 – a decline of 100 from the 5,011 hate crimes reported to police by the same jurisdictions in 2007.

The CCAA announced its all conference awards, but even though Cal State San Bernardino won its seventh team title in nine years and fourth in a row, the Coyotes didn't claim top player. That honor went to senior Sylvia Schmidt of UC San Diego. Schmidt was third in the CCAA in kills per game, a department in which Cal State's Jane Chafeh percentage. Cal State coach Kim Cherniss was selected Coach of the Year, though. She led the Coyotes (29-1) to a 10th consecutive NCAA tournament appearance that included a school- record 29 regular-season victories.

The Cal State San Bernardino volleyball team has made its way to the NCAA Division II West Region championship match the last nine years so it would seem that the 2009 quarterfinal against Seattle Pacific was just a formality. It was. The top-seeded Coyotes got off to a strong start and never looked back, downing eighth-seeded Seattle Pacific 3-0 Thursday in a match that barely took an hour.
